My wifi dropped, webcam froze, mic cut out, and the ETS app froze once; I restarted, checked settings, and rejoined.

Permissions: I forgot to allow camera/mic in the browser. Fix it in browser settings and restart before starting.
Internet: I switched to a wired Ethernet, limited other devices, and ran a quick speed test. If it drops, pause and re-check connection.
Browser/Proctoring: I use Chrome or Edge and keep them updated; disable VPN/proxy and unnecessary extensions that might block the proctoring pop-ups.
Audio: Use a headset, test the mic level in Windows/macOS, and set the input properly. I’ve reduced feedback by not using the built-in mic.
Security software: Antivirus/firewall blocked screenshots at first. Add an exception or temporarily disable it during the test (remember to re-enable afterward).
System performance: Close background apps, plug in power, and update drivers. Keep the environment quiet and well-lit.

During my TOEFL Home Edition attempts, the most common tech gremlins were internet drops, hardware detours, and proctoring software hiccups. A mid‑test disconnect would stall sections, so I switched to a wired Ethernet and kept a mobile hotspot as a last resort. Webcams or microphones sometimes failed to be detected or selected, usually due to OS privacy settings or driver glitches; fixing meant granting permission in Windows/macOS and choosing the correct input/output in the test launcher. I also ran into the proctoring window freezing or failing to load, which required a restart of the app or the computer and re‑logging in after ensuring the pre‑test checks pass. Other frequent issues were audio playing out of sync, low microphone volume, or background noise triggering alerts, and browser/extension conflicts that blocked the test launcher from starting. Practical prep: run the pre-test checker a day before, use a wired connection, disable VPNs and unnecessary extensions, close other programs, update drivers, and verify firewall/antivirus won’t block the TOEFL app. If problems pop up, document error codes and contact ETS support with a timestamp and screenshot.

From my experience with TOEFL Home Edition, common issues were internet drops and the proctoring software freezing. My webcam would glitch or go dark for a moment, and the mic sometimes failed to pick up sound until I rejoined. Some testers saw browser or system-check errors. Keeping a stable connection and doing a full tech check beforehand helped.
