More than 11, 000 universities and colleges worldwide accept TOEFL scores. That comes from ETS and spans 150+ countries. When I applied for grad programs in the US, UK, and Canada, TOEFL was accepted by nearly every school I considered; a few also listed IELTS as an option, but most clearly accepted TOEFL. In practice, that means you’ve got lots of options and you can apply to many programs using one test. If you’re planning now, use the ETS Institution Search to see exact requirements for the schools you’re eyeing and note the score levels they expect.

There are more than 11, 000 institutions worldwide that accept TOEFL scores. That's the figure ETS promotes, and it covers universities, colleges, and other accredited programs across more than 150 countries. In my experience applying to grad programs, TOEFL opened doors in the US, UK, Canada, and parts of Europe. Most schools I looked at accepted TOEFL by default, with a clear minimum score requirement (often in the 90, 100 iBT range) and the option to substitute with IELTS in some cases. I personally applied to 6 programs; all accepted TOEFL scores. A couple required official ETS reporting; others let you self-report initially but still wanted the official score later. The key is to plan ahead: check each program’s minimums, confirm that they accept TOEFL iBT only (not PBT), and make sure your score is sent to all your target schools before deadlines. If you’re early in the process, you’ll find that TOEFL is still the most widely accepted English proficiency test across universities worldwide.

From my graduate school hunt, TOEFL scores are accepted by well over 11, 000 universities and colleges worldwide. I saw this in practice: nearly every program I reviewed listed TOEFL as an acceptable English test, with varying minimum scores by department. Always double-check each school's latest requirements, but it's broadly accepted across regions.
