When they calculate your overall IELTS band they take the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking scores and then round to the nearest half band. That means 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0. If your average lands exactly on a whole number like 6.0 or 6.5 there is no rounding. I remember ending up with 7.25 once, so the test center simply bumped it to 7.5, and I got the score I needed. Keep in mind each module is scored to the nearest band, so work on consistency across all four.

The official approach is to average the four section scores and round to the nearest half band. If the raw average is x.25 it goes up to x.5, if it is x.75 it goes up to the next whole number, otherwise it stays where it is. There is no rounding down in those cases, so a 6.25 gives you a 6.5 overall while a 6.75 gives you a 7.0 overall. I once tracked my mock results, spotted a 6.2 average, and realized I needed just a little boost to push each section up so the rounding worked in my favor. Focus on steady improvement across modules so your average hits the rounding sweet spot rather than relying on luck. Knowing the rule helps plan targeted practice, so you can aim for scores that lock in the half band you need.

When I sat for IELTS my section scores averaged 6.25 and that got rounded up to 6.5 overall, so I always kept that rule in mind while prepping. Work to keep each section strong because the rounding only happens at the quarter or three quarter marks.
