From my own loans and talking to friends, servicers don’t usually give you a heads-up that forgiveness is about to be applied. I watched my balance sit for years until I finally submitted the PSLF/IDR forgiveness paperwork and got a status update. The real workflow is a lot of checking: sign into the servicer portal, enable email and text alerts, and remember to certify annual income or update employment. My trick: set calendar reminders every 12 months to submit the Employment Certification Form, and keep copies of every payment receipt and piece of correspondence. If you’ve made qualifying payments, you’ll get messages when credits are counted and when forgiveness is approved, often after the government confirms it, not before. So stay proactive, not waiting for a notification.

Not typically. Servicers generally don’t send a proactive heads-up before forgiveness is applied. Expect status changes only after you submit qualifying payments and appropriate forms (e.g., Employment Certification for PSLF). Monitor the portal, enable alerts, and file annual certifications to ensure credits are counted.
