During a servicer transfer last year, I found out what really matters are the on-time payments in a qualifying plan, not which company is handling the loan. When my Direct Loans moved from Navient to Aidvantage, the clock didn’t reset. The new servicer carried over my payment history and kept counting each on-time payment toward PSLF as long as I stayed in an eligible plan (I was in an IDR plan) and kept making full, on-time payments. The switch did cause a short lag in the portal showing the total counts, and a couple of months showed up as deferments during the transition. Those months don’t count toward the 120, but they also don’t erase previously counted payments.
I learned to stay proactive: keep all receipts and monthly statements, regularly check the new servicer’s PSLF counts, and use the Employment Certification Form (ECF) annually to verify credit for past payments. If a transfer makes counts look wrong, contact the servicer’s PSLF team and request a recalc or an update to the PSLF portal. In my case, a quick follow‑up fixed the mismatch and I kept moving toward forgiveness.

During my PSLF journey, servicer transfers didn’t reset the qualifying payment count. As loans moved from one servicer to another, the total kept accumulating so long as I stayed in a qualifying plan on Direct Loans. I watched the new portal lag, so I pulled my old payment history and submitted it via the Employment Certification Form to confirm the counts.

During my servicer transfer, I learned payments still count if the history is correctly migrated; verify with the new servicer under PSLF.
