On my campus, 24/7 emergency line, campus police, safety escorts, blue-light towers, and the international student office kept me safe and informed.

Campus safety surprised me when I arrived as an international student. These resources became my first line of defense, and they’re all pretty easy to use once you know them.

- 24/7 campus police and blue-light phones: I used a blue-light phone once on a late walk home; an officer met me and walked me to my dorm.

- Emergency numbers: 911 for medical or violent emergencies; campus non-emergency line for reporting concerns or noise issues.

- Safety escorts and night shuttle: I’ve booked rides when I missed the last bus; the shuttle/escort can walk you to your building if needed.

- Campus safety app: I added friends as emergency contacts, checked in when I stayed late, and got real-time alerts about incidents.

- Emergency alerts and shelter-in-place: texts, emails, and campus sirens; drills helped me know where to shelter.

- International Student Office: they update emergency contacts, share visa/arrival tips, and connect you to language and safety resources.

- Health and counseling: on-campus clinic for visits and vaccines; 24/7 crisis line and quick counseling options.

- Housing, RA support, and safety trainings: RA-led safety talks, fire drills, and posted evacuation routes.

- Quick prep tips: save numbers, map safe routes, carry a small flashlight, know nearby blue lights.

International Student Services helped me get safety briefings, campus safety app, and emergency contacts. On campus we have 24/7 security, blue-light phones, and campus police. I’ve used the escort service at night and the student health clinic when I was sick. If it’s urgent, call campus security or 911 (US) and reach ISS for visa/emergency support.

On my first semester as an international student, I learned quickly how much campuses invest in safety. You’ve got campus police or security who patrol 24/7 and a direct emergency line you can call from anywhere. There are blue-light phones around campus that connect you instantly. The Safe Walk/Escort program is real, I used it late after study sessions; someone meets you at your location and walks you home. There are late-night shuttles too. For support, the international student office (often called OISS) can help with safety planning, emergencies, and even contact family if needed. Counseling services are free or low cost for students, and reporting channels through Title IX exist if anything uncomfortable happens. Remember to save numbers in your phone and use the resources early.
