When I started as an international student, health insurance was non-negotiable. Most schools either require you to join the university’s student health plan or show a private plan that meets minimum coverage. I went with the campus plan because it was simple and we have clinics on campus. Costs vary, but my plan was around $1, 800, $2, 200 a year, with small copays for visits and a modest deductible. Without coverage, even a single doctor visit or urgent care trip can blow a budget. If your home country offers a waiver for private insurance that meets the school’s criteria, use it; otherwise expect to pay roughly the same ballpark. Start by checking your school's requirements and then compare a couple of private options.

Most international students end up needing health insurance, and many schools require it or at least a proof-of-coverage waiver if you bring your own plan. When I studied in the US, I went with the campus health plan because it was the simplest path. It cost about 1, 000, 2, 000 per year and covered visits, urgent care, ER, prescriptions, and preventive care. If you have a plan with comparable benefits, you can usually waive the campus plan by showing proof.

Other option: private international plans bought directly from insurers. They tend to run around 30, 100 per month (roughly 350, 1, 200 per year) depending on your age, coverage level, and deductibles. They’re handy if you want more control over benefits or if you’ll be between schools or back home during breaks.

Tips from my experience: check if your university’s plan is mandatory or if you can waive; verify in-network doctors and hospital coverage; make sure pre-existing conditions are covered; look for mental health, dental, and vision benefits if you care; and start the process early so you’re covered from day one.
