I store long-term holdings mostly in a hardware wallet, with a small multisig, and keep exchanges only for trades.

Long-term crypto storage finally clicked for me when I stopped treating exchanges as “bank vaults.” I started with an exchange for convenience, and I learned the hard way that hacks and withdrawals can become frozen. Now my core holdings live on a hardware wallet. The device itself stays offline, and I back up the 24-word seed with a steel backup and a separate written copy in a fireproof safe. I use a strong separate passphrase (a 20+ character phrase) as the so-called third factor. Every seed backup is stored independently.

For larger positions, I add a multisig layer. I set up a 2-of-3 or 3-of-5 scheme with keys kept in different locations and on different devices. This way, no single mistake or theft can drain everything, and I still can recover if one key disappears. It’s a bit more setup and ongoing management, but it’s worth it for peace of mind.

I keep a tiny amount on an exchange only for liquidity, and I withdraw as soon as possible. Bottom line: hardware wallet as the core, multisig for big holdings, exchange only for access to modest funds.

Hardware wallets are my go-to for long-term. I keep the primary seed offline, back it up in steel, and run a 2-of-3 multisig with two devices in separate safes. I only leave small amounts on an exchange for quick trades.

Long-term holds stay off exchanges. I learned that the hard way after watching a few hacks and cornering myself with a single-point failure. Most of my stash lives in a hardware wallet (Ledger) with the seed stored offline and split into a few chunks. For extra security I use a 2-of-3 multisig setup: my hardware wallet, a separate offline computer, and a safety key kept in a safe. If one piece disappears, I can still recover. I keep any active liquidity on an exchange only temporarily, and never fund a hot wallet with my entire balance. The combo, hardware wallet plus multisig, gives me confidence for very long-term holdings.
