Center policies around water are usually lenient, but they do vary. In my experience helping IELTS candidates, bringing a small, clear water bottle is usually allowed as long as it’s sealed and unobtrusive. Always check your specific test center’s rules before exam day. When I took the test, I brought a 500 ml clear bottle, cap on, and kept it at the edge of my desk so I could sip without looking away from the paper. It helped keep my throat comfortable during long sections without disturbing others. If your center bans water, plan to hydrate before the test and during any breaks; otherwise, a simple, glass-free bottle is the easiest option.

In my IELTS sit, a tiny clear bottle with a cap stayed on my desk and nobody flagged it.

From my experience and what I tell students, you can usually bring water, but verify center rules. Do this: 1) pick a small, transparent bottle under 500 ml, 2) remove or minimize labels and keep the cap on when not drinking, 3) place it in front of you where you can reach it without moving your eyes too far, 4) sip during pauses rather than while scribbling to avoid spills. I found this helped my throat and concentration, especially during the listening section. If a center doesn’t allow in-room water, drink well beforehand and during the official break if one is offered. The key is to hydrate without letting the bottle become a distraction for you or others.
