From my own I-20 process, these were the funds docs I gathered:
- Bank statements for the last 3, 6 months showing available funds in USD or other liquid currency.
- Official bank letter on bank letterhead confirming balance and access to funds.
- Scholarship award letter or assistantship offer with amounts and duration.
- Sponsor affidavit of support (Form I-134) plus sponsor’s bank statements and proof of income (pay stubs, tax returns).
- If you’re taking a loan, a loan sanction/approval letter.
- Any proof of additional liquid assets (mutual funds, CDs) with translations if not in English.
Keep extra copies and translations ready for the visa interview.

When I did it, I submitted three to six months of bank statements, a sponsor letter, and scholarship/loan letters; also tax returns if required.

In my experience, for an I-20 you must prove you can cover first year. Bring: bank statements (last 3, 6 months) showing sufficient funds; sponsor’s affidavit of support; official sponsor/bank letters confirming liquid funds; any scholarship/assistantship letters; and loan or sponsorship letters. If using assets, include valuations, translated and currency-converted.
