From my planning for fall, enrollment deposits are still common and mostly nonrefundable after a set deadline, though schools are tinkering with rules more than before. Typical deposits run a few hundred dollars (public universities often $200, $350; private colleges $500, $1, 000). The big change this year is more explicit exceptions and deferral paths. Most schools require you to confirm by a firm deadline (often May 1), and if you miss it, you forfeit the seat unless you negotiate a late acceptance with the admissions office. Refundability is mostly limited: full refunds rarely offered after the deadline; some will refund for severe circumstances (visa denial, serious illness, or family emergencies) if you document it, or allow a deferral with the deposit applied to next year or a new deposit due later.

In my own circle, one state university left a clear refundable window through mid-June for unforeseen delays, while a private college shifted to a deferral-without-extra-deposit option for one year.

Bottom line: expect nonrefundable deposits by default, but ask early about exceptions, deferrals, and refund windows.

My university allowed refundable deposits if you defer or cancel by a date, with credit options; many campuses followed similar deadlines this year.

From my experience this year, most campuses asked for a nonrefundable enrollment deposit after a short grace period. If you withdrew before the deadline, you got a full refund or credit; after that, it was often kept or rolled as a credit toward next year in some cases. A few schools offered refunds for visa denials or medical emergencies, with documentation.
