Last year I swapped the usual late-night TV countdown for something a little cozier with the kids. We kicked off with a tiny letter-writing ceremony: each kid wrote a note to themselves about what they want to learn or do in the coming year, sealed in envelopes to be opened next December. Then we made a 'year in review' jar: slips of paper with one happy moment from every month. At midnight we opened the jar and read them aloud, followed by glow-stick races in the living room and a mock toast with sparkling juice. Simple, no screens, lots of laughs. A tradition I want to keep: a family memory book page for each January, with doodles and a photo.

Two quick ideas: start a memory jar for the year’s highlights, then have the kids write letters to their future selves to open next January.
