Keep a well-watered real tree or switch to an LED artificial one; unplug lights, and place it away from heat sources.

In my place, I learned the hard way: dry trees + candles = trouble. I now water the real tree every day, use LED lights with a timer, and keep the tree well away from fireplaces and space heaters. I also keep a small ABC extinguisher handy and check lights for wear.

From my perspective, there are three pillars to safe Christmas trees: selecting wisely, maintaining well, and having a plan. Real trees require daily watering and keeping the stand filled; fake trees labeled fire-retardant help, but you still treat them with caution around heat. I use a timer for lights and LED bulbs that run cooler, and I keep the tree several feet from fireplaces, radiators, and candles. I also install smoke alarms with fresh batteries and keep a small extinguisher accessible. If a tree shows signs of drying, needle shedding, stiff branches, remove it promptly and dispose of it safely. In a pinch, if a spark occurs, remember to prioritize evacuation and call emergency services rather than trying to fight a spreading fire alone.
