KYC/AML for Web3 hinges on custody and fiat on-ramps; most DeFi stays uncustodial and non-KYC, while fiat gateways trigger jurisdictional KYC/AML checks and travel-rule compliance.

In my experience helping a DeFi project, KYC isn’t automatic. If you’re truly non-custodial, most protocols don’t require KYC, but any fiat on-ramp or custodial service will trigger AML checks. We partnered with compliant gateways, did minimal data needs, and documented flows for users. Bottom line: scan your user journeys and shore up disclosures; stay ready for regs changing.
