Start with a well-known exchange, link a bank account, and fund the smallest buy you can tolerate. Enable 2FA, confirm withdrawal addresses, and then transfer coins to your own wallet. I always keep a paper backup of recovery phrases in a fireproof safe.

When I first bought Bitcoin I opened accounts on two major exchanges, one for buying with my bank account and one just in case of outages. I used Coinbase for its easy verification and Kraken for lower fees once I needed more advanced orders. I took photos of my IDs, set up 2FA with an authenticator app, and never clicked links from emails claiming to be from them. After the first purchase I moved most of the Bitcoin to a hardware wallet and kept a smaller amount on the exchange for trading, so even if one platform is compromised I still have access to most of my coins.

Pick a trusted exchange, verify identity, enable 2FA, move crypto to a hardware wallet I control.
