Skip nonrefundable bookings. If your visa interview shifts, swap to flexible flights and hotels or use travel credits. When mine was delayed, I kept a 1, 2 week buffer and watched the consulate notices to grab an earlier slot. Keep a ready docs bundle (passport, DS-160 confirmation, receipts) and be prepared to adjust plans.

When my interview got pushed back by two weeks, I booked a fully flexible ticket and stayed near the embassy with refundable lodging as a backup.
