After donating, the charity emails a receipt or mails a letter with date and amount; I save it for taxes.

From my experience, charities email or mail a receipt with the donation date, amount, charity name, and their tax ID. For gifts of $250+ in the U.S., you also get a contemporaneous written acknowledgment noting any goods or services received. Keep these receipts; they’re what you attach to your tax return or use for deduction claims.
